1. What is glow in dark pigment?

Glow in dark pigment is also called glow in the dark powder, luminous pigment or . After the glow in the dark products are exposed to light, it can glow in the dark.

iSuoChem glow in dark pigment is a new environmentally friendly alkaline earth aluminate pigment (based on strontium aluminate. This is the latest generation of glow powder, which is about 10 times stronger than the old sulfide-based phosphor.), non-toxic and non-radioactive. The pigment particles are charged by light. The pigment releases energy in the form of light. The long-lasting glow in dark pigment can last up to 12 hours. These pigments glow for a long time. They do not need to be charged frequently. It is 30 times brighter than other glow in the dark products.

The particle of luminous pigment(glow in dark pigment) is crystalline in structure. This means it can absorb, store and emit light. Glow crystal material absorbs all light. This has great potential in terms of safety, novelty and industry.

2. What is the life of glow in dark pigment? (Is there a limit on the number of recharges?)

Lifespan: Strontium aluminate glow in dark pigments can last for more than 15 years

After 15 years, the pigment will still glow, but the brightness will be reduced. This reduction will not be very noticeable.

(Tips: Strontium aluminate is the material of glow in the dark pigment. So sometimes, we also call it Strontium aluminate pigment.).

Recharge limit: The charge and glow cycle can be repeated many times without losing its brilliance. You can recharge the pigment as many times as you want. It can be used for at least 15 years.

How we use the glow in the dark powder affects the service life. If we mix the pigment with inferior paint, the pigment will be susceptible to moisture after a few years.

3. How to make and use long-lasting high-brightness phosphorescent glow in dark pigment?
The more powder is added, the higher the brightness and the longer it lasts (for specific details, please refer to the No. 7 FAQ below).
Use a white or light background for the best results. Colors other than white will dim the brilliance.
Use the clearest carrier. The pigment in the carrier will reduce its brightness and duration.
Thicker layers of super phosphorescent pigment will produce a brighter and longer-lasting glow.
Avoid moisture during manufacturing. Do not use a high-acid carrier. Do not grind super phosphorescent pigments as it will reduce brightness. The ratio of phosphorescent glow in dark pigment to medium is 10% to 50% by weight.

4. What can I use this glow in dark powder for?

Just about anything you can imagine.

Get creative! Our glow in the dark pigments are versatile! They are safe for use in consumer products such as fishing lures, sports bracelets, DIY crafts, nail art, woodworking, concrete engineering, clothing, shoes, hats, watches, and sporting goods.

In addition, it is also great for printing, coatings, construction projects, interior and exterior decoration, and safety signs such as escape.

5. Is glow in dark pigment safe for children? Does it have a smell?
Yes, it is quite safe and environmentally friendly, and has no smell.

Strontium aluminum pigments (Strontium aluminum based glow pigments are our core series in hot selling) are safe.

iSuoChem glow in dark pigments meet the EN 71-3 standard, which limits the content of heavy metals in toys that children may swallow. However, these pigments are small, hard and rough crystals that can irritate the skin, eyes and respiratory tract. When using raw pigments, it is important to avoid dust and protect yourself with masks, gloves and glasses.

6. How to use glow in dark pigments?

You can use glow in dark pigment powder with paint, inks, plastics, candles, hair spray, bait, caulk, glue, wax, plastisol, etc.

Mix glow in dark pigments with the medium you want to use. Glow powders do not dissolve in the medium (so, glow in dark pigments are not water-soluble).

They form a suspension, which can be more or less stable depending on the particle size of the pigment and the viscosity of the medium.

7. What is the mixing ratio of glow in dark pigments and mediums?

Mix glow in dark pigment powder with the medium in a ratio of 10% to 50% by weight.

There is no universal mixing ratio. It depends on the medium, process and application. The amount depends on the degree of glow you want. If the base color is not white, add more glow powder (for why this is done, please refer to the No. 3 FAQ above).
Glow in the dark pigment for plastics is added at 5% to 30% by weight. For resins, it's 20-30%. For glow in the dark paints, it's 15-25%. Screen printing may require up to 50% glow in the dark pigment. Test before you begin to find the best amount of glow in the dark pigment to add. If you have questions about the above addition ratios, feel free to contact us for the latest glow in the dark product application guidelines.

1 kg of dry glow in the dark powder will cover an area of about 3.3 square meters or 12 square feet.
The amount of powder depends on the amount of glow required, cost, and application method.
A basic guideline is to use 10% to 50% by weight. If you're making something cheap, use less powder. If you're screen printing a shirt and want to do it in one go, use more powder.
The more glow powder you use, the brighter the glow and the longer it will last. Consider the color of the surface you're applying the medium to. Try different ratios after following the guidelines.

8. Which medium can glow in dark pigment be used with?
As long as the medium allows light to pass through, adding dye in small amounts will not harm the glow effect. This allows more light to charge the pigment, making it brighter. You can mix glow in dark pigment with white wall paint. Dark paint has a greater effect on glow than light paint. If we use non-waterproof pigments, the medium must not contain water. Avoid using paints with UV filters as they will prevent the glow in the dark pigment from charging.

9. Which glow in the dark pigment is best for resin?

Yellow green or Blue-green glow in dark pigment powder is best for resin.

Our customers usually choose glow in the dark pigment yellow-green (MG Series) and blue-green (HB Series). It glows strongly, is UV-resistant, and is affordable. The particle size is good because the pigment will be covered by the resin layer. For small details or thin layers, use a smaller particle size pigment (0.03 mm). For specific glow in the dark application guidance and glow in the dark particle size selection, please consult our sales staff.

10. Can users mix different colors of glow in the dark pigment to produce different colors?

No, not recommended.

If more colors are required, please consult us and we will assist you in new color development.

11. Can I grind the glow in the dark pigment to make it finer?

No, not recommended.

We never recommend users to grind it themselves, there are two possibilities.
11-1. Strontium aluminate is hard (Mohs hardness 7.6), so there is a risk of contaminating the glow pigment and damaging the grinding equipment during the grinding process.
11-2. Grinding will damage the pigment. Waterproof pigments will lose their protective layer. The smaller the particles, the less luminous they are. Please consider the particle size that is best for your application before purchasing.

12. How long does glow in dark powder need to charge?

Under UV light: 2-4 minutes.
Under sun light: 6-9 minutes.
Under strip lighting or energy saving bulbs: 20-24 minutes.
Under incandescent light bulb: about 25-26 minutes.

In good light, pure glow powder take 10~20 minutes to be fully charged. Two factors will make this time longer:
12-1. The base we mix the pigment with. If the base is not completely transparent, the pigment particles will be covered, which will take longer to charge.
12-2. The location and type of light source are also important. Glow in the dark pigments in deep shadows or low light will never be fully charged.

iSuoChem currently has fast-charging glow in the dark pigments, which are suitable for some special applications. Widely used in places with low light intensity such as tunnels, mines, underground garages, submarines, etc. This pigment is very suitable for applications that can only be illuminated for a short time. Even if it is not fully charged, it is still better than ordinary pigments.
In addition, some customers often ask what is the difference in the charging efficiency of glow in the dark pigments under UV light and fluorescent light? Glow in the dark pigments react best to UV ultraviolet rays. Tungsten filament bulbs, or fluorescent lamps, take longer to charge the pigment because they do not emit much ultraviolet rays.

13. How long can glow pigments continue to glow?

iSuoChem glow pigments can continue to glow at 3 hours, 5 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours, 10 hours, 12 hours or even longer.

In general, we will say that the long lasting type glow in dark powder glows for 12 hours. But this is not all. Some of our glow in dark powder glow for more than 12 hours, but the light will weaken after 6-8 hours.

After 10 minutes, the glowing brightness of the glow in dark pigments is about 10 times weaker than when it first started. Different glow in dark pigments from different sources may glow better or worse. But in general, they tend to glow in the same way.

After the first 10 minutes, the light fades slower. The best pigments glow for 1-3 hours. The worst glow for only 1 hour. Glow in dark pigments emit light through the surface, so a wall painted with glow pigments will show an interesting effect even after 8 hours or more.

The surroundings of glowing products are important. The deeper the darkness, the better the glow. If there is a light source nearby, the glow will be less noticeable or even completely invisible. The ideal location for glow-in-the-dark pigments is somewhere with plenty of light when charging and total darkness when in use. The farther we are from these conditions, the weaker the glow.
