Pearlescent pigments are composed of a thin layer of metal oxide covering the mica. Changing the thin layer of metal oxide produces a different pearlescent effect. Compared with other pigments, pearlescent pigments have an unparalleled effect on their unique soft pearl luster. The special surface structure, high refractive index and good transparency make it the same effect as pearl luster in a transparent medium.

The excellent chemical and high temperature resistance of pearlescent pigments offers its wide application in coatings, inks, plastics and many other fields. They provide a new color system and color quality for these products. Pearlescent pigments have low levels of heavy metals and meet relevant safety technical standards, making them suitable for food packaging and children's toys. Both acid and alkali do not erode the pearlescent pigment at room temperature. Pearlescent pigments can not burn, do not self-ignite, do not conduct electricity, and can withstand high temperatures of 600~800 °C. Pearlescent pigments can also be used in reactive coatings for radiation curing systems (electron beam curing, photocuring). The special surface chemical structure of pearlescent pigments makes them excellent in hydrophilicity, so it can be applied to waterborne coatings, but it has poor lipophilicity. Therefore, when used in organic systems, the problem of poor dispersibility may occur. Surface treatment of pearlescent pigments is required. It also makes it well suited for use in organic systems.

In terms of the use of pearlescent pigments, there are the following methods:

1. In the offset printing, the pearlescent powder with a smaller particle size is mixed with the printing ink in a certain ratio and then printed. Or use a water-based, UV glazing system to add a certain proportion of pearl powder to the glazing glaze for glazing coating, the effect is better; pearlescent pulp and offset printing ink can be mixed in a certain ratio for printing can greatly improve the ink brightness, and pearlescent effect.

2. Gravure and flexographic printing are carried out by mixing pearl powder and ink corresponding to the printing plate.

3. The pearlescent effect is related to the bearing capacity and mixing ratio of the ink to the pearl.
