How to avoid the use of toxic lead chromate and lead molybdate without affecting the color of the paint?

27 Apr 2023

The increasing awareness regarding the toxic nature of lead-containing pigments has prompted countries to impose restrictions on their usage in paints. In response, formulators have sought alternative pigments that offer both vivid coloration and improved performance without compromising on quality. While organic pigments combined with metal oxide mixed pigments have shown promise as a replacement for lead-based options, other non-toxic alternatives have emerged as well.

Organic pigments, such as Pigment Red 48:4, Red 112, Red 170, Red 254, Red 255, Pigment Purple 19, Pigment Orange 36, and Orange 73, have demonstrated excellent hiding power and weather resistance. These alternatives can effectively substitute lead-containing pigments in various applications.

However, it is worth noting that in some instances, metal oxide hybrid pigments exhibit superior performance compared to titanium dioxide. These inorganic composite coloring pigments offer inherent vivid hues, high saturation, and exceptional hiding power. This combination allows formulators to reduce the reliance on expensive organic pigments and potentially eliminate the need for titanium dioxide altogether.

For yellow pigments, a particularly appealing alternative is bismuth vanadium molybdenum yellow, also known as pigment yellow 184. This pigment outshines titanium nickel (pigment yellow 53), an example of a metal oxide mixed pigment, in terms of brightness and tinting power. Furthermore, bismuth vanadium molybdenum yellow possesses outstanding heat and weather resistance properties. Notably, its impressive hiding power enables its use without the addition of titanium dioxide, further optimizing formulations.

By embracing these lead-free alternatives, paint manufacturers can adhere to regulatory guidelines while maintaining the vibrant coloration and durability expected from their products. The availability of a wide range of non-toxic organic and inorganic composite pigments opens up new possibilities for formulators, encouraging the development of safer and more sustainable paint solutions.
